Leadership Characteristics and Business Failure

In a recent article by Forbes online, titled "Businesses Don't Fail - Leaders Do", Mike Myatt outlines 15 Leadership Characteristics that can contribute to the failure of the business.

This list is interesting and provides insight on the challenges many high-level leaders face. It also provides insight in what I like to refer to as "Controlling the Controllable."

  • Lack of Character
  • Lack of Vision
  • Poor Branding
  • Lack of Execution
  • Flawed Strategy
  • Lack of Capital
  • Poor Management
  • Lack of Sales
  • Toxic Culture
  • No Innovation
  • No Market
  • Poor Professional Advice
  • Attract & Retain Talent
  • Competitive awareness
  • Market Changes

When one looks through the "reasons" it’s obvious that the causes are varied. Some may be lack of experience. Others border on lack of training. Others even point to organization’s culture – and the reasons there are varied also.

​Others are strategic and confusing for leaders. These include " No market”, “Competitive Awareness" or "Poor Branding"​ for example.​

There are many characteristics on this list that can be learned and put to use to help a leader. And the good news is that mastery of these characteristic can help any leader – in any industry – in any organization.​

Maybe you are not destined to be a CEO. Just maybe you want to lead a small group in achieving a worthy goal. So the question becomes what can you do to support your goals?

  • Owning Your Mistakes
  • Toughness
  • Winning Friends and Influencing People
  • Singular Vision
  • Powerfully Passionate

Of course this list can include other leadership characteristics, but I think this is a good starting point. Don't you?

The next question to ask is, "can these be developed?"

If your goal is to be a leader or simply be successful in life, I think we all can agree. The listed traits above will help you in any endeavor.​ And they really are not outside our realm of achievement.

What I mean is that simply by focusing on a few areas of achievement, you can align all of the leadership characteristics that will make you successful.​


  • Decide what you want - Get clear
  • Develop a plan or a vision
  • Focus
  • Be Persistant
  • ​Be accountable
  • Collaborate with others
  • And go get what you want!
