Philosophers have always reasoned in so many words that to adequately build a team or a sense of unity amongst a large group of people takes an event that joins them in a common cause or the concept of picking an enemy. It’s amazing that too this day we see that politicians, business leaders, sport coaches and bureaucrats choose an enemy, challenge, dilemma or adversity to overcome. And they say we must “Fight” for what is right, against the enemy or mother nature.

Religions use this motif too; We Must Fight Against Evil! Pretty innocuous when you think about it, after all what is evil? Well, once you agree that evil is bad and must be overcome and fight against, then all you have to do is label something evil and then it is all about; “Go, Fight, Win, Hey!” Indeed, after a while it all sounds like a High School Football Game or Soccer Match.

If you are trying to build a team in your company or a department of a large corporation, you do have your work cut out for you in many regards. You can take the easy approach and choose an enemy to build your team, call it the competition, but you also need to consider the implications of that. For instance, will your team be doing things to screw with the competition or be doing things to give good customer service that will result in more referrals?

Will your team be trying to pull a fast one on the competition and make bad business decisions in the process or will they be challenging the same store sales from the previous corresponding periods. Will your team work to secure a more efficient work place. Team building is not rocket science, but you need to be sure you are doing it for the right reasons if you want to get the right results. Please do think on this.
