Making Managers Into Leaders
Business Management, Leadership, Management November 22nd. 2009, 9:03pmManagers are the people in whom trust is placed to manage the every day functions of any given business from employee issues all the way to making sure the business is profitable. Generally speaking, this is a position of authority including the hiring of new employees, their day to day management and growth and, when needed, their termination. When it comes to making managers into leaders, you have to focus on slightly different criteria.
The first thing is to understand that not all managers, despite their position, are effective leaders. There are qualities about a leader that not all managers have but this is something that can be taught to almost any manager. The first thing to not is that a manager, manages while a leaders, leads.
One way to begin the process of making managers into leaders is to give the manager in question a small task in which he, or she, will need to utilize employees to accomplish the task. One important thing is to ensure the manager is not doing the work on their own but leading others into doing it.
Another aspect of a good leaders is knowing the people employees. A good leader has to understand the goals and drives of the people under them otherwise they will be disconnected from the staff. The staff will be more likely to follow any directive from that manager if they feel he has their best interests, in the long run, in mind. If they feel he is somehow against them, there will always be breakdowns in authority.
Finally, one other way of making managers into leaders is to make sure they are leading by example. A good leader does not have to always give orders or tell people what to do. Just by their presence the staff should know exactly what he or she expects and already doing it. A manager has to go around and manage the actions of their team while a leader knows they are doing what they are supposed to be doing.
Making managers into leaders requires good development practices and dedication from existing managers. Some people are born leaders while others are taught how to lead but, with the right assistance and guidance, any manager can become an excellent leader.
