There are people who are often regarded as born leaders. But the statement is a debatable one. Leadership is considered to be a behavioral skill and therefore develops as one matures. Several factors determine the development of this quality.

It depends on the individual’s frame of mind, his or her attitude towards life, their ability to take decisions, work in co-operation with others and their performance in their chosen field of expertise. Be it the corporate world, the world of sports or that of politics, the basic qualities of a leader remain the same. Their work is not at all easy as there are a lot of expectations to be met.

Do not let the opportunities go without exploring them further. In order to project yourself as a potential leader, you need to utilize every opportunity that comes your way. Take responsibility in all area’s of your life. You need to be responsible for whatever decisions you make and therefore have the capacity to take both success and failure in your stride.

Make decisions easily. You should have the confidence in your own abilities and therefore be confident about what you are going to undertake. There might be situations when you have to take a call on your own without guidance from anyone and being thrown in at the deep end to sort out a situation.

Whenever situations like this arise you are effectively stepping out of your comfort zone and doing something that you are not comfortable with. This in itself can be character building and will make you a stronger and more confident person.

Make it happen. Do not wait for people to come up and ask you to do something. Take the initiative and volunteer out of your own interest. Co-operate and always be ready to help others with their problems. Develop your skills to work efficiently as part of a team. Motivate yourself and others.

Do not let your colleagues feel low when a project doesn’t work in the way that you had wanted it to. Cheer them up and infuse in them the confidence to start anew. Step up to the next level and become that successful person you have always wanted to be.
