We are living with uncertainty, complexity, ambiguity, paradox and unpredictability. These are the norms. But what is this thing called “resilience” and how do you become a resilient person?

I have the honor and pleasure of volunteering for many groups and causes. In many situations, I am called upon to lead as chairperson or co-chairperson. Recently, I had the honor of co-chairing an event that involved leading and motivating a team of volunteers to work together for a successful result.
The communication between a boss and his or her employees is of great importance to maintain a good atmosphere on the job. However, it seems that many employees are unsatisfied with their direct leading manager or boss. Usually one of the reasons is a lack of good communication between both parties.
One thing a boss should do to create clarity on his department is providing his employees with the information he knows. Off course, some information is nott meant for each employee but regular information should not be kept from the employees ears.
Both of our daughters attend the same university in what we in the West like to call Eastern Canada, and what those who live there call Central Canada. (Likely because a large part of the Canadian population and half of the provinces are east of Ontario). Because they are at such a distance from us we use a variety of methods to stay in touch.
Weekly postcards, Facebook, texting and phone calls are all in the mix. I also send packages and treats such as gift cards especially in the winter when the weather in the East is less benign than here on the West Coast.
This year for Valentine’s I sent Starbuck’s cards to everyone along with some magazine articles and newspaper clippings. The typical Mum stuff. My niece, who is at a different university, received hers but neither of my daughters did to their profound disappointment.
There are a multitude of problems in business that are caused by ineffective communication. Misunderstandings, conflict, giving your company a negative image, lower productivity. Communication skill is the life blood of successful business enterprise and it takes many forms; internal and external, in writing, on the phone and in person.
Effective communication within a company between departments and individual colleagues is essential for a productive working environment. Just as clear and professional communication with clients is imperative to secure and maximise business opportunities.
There comes a point in everybody’s career where it is time to ask for a change of vocation. As Dolly said, working with service and devotion deserves a fair promotion, especially when you are working nine to five.
To get there takes more than just working hard, you need to be able to demonstrate management skills and prove that you are capable of influencing, encouraging and inspiring people in the workplace. Leadership training gives an insight into the type of qualities that need to be honed to perfection to make an impression and help you climb the boss-mans ladder.

Successful leadership practices and professional business management skills are proficiencies that develop over time. Certainly, some people are born leaders, but there are certain areas that can be concentrated on to develop leadership skills.
Mahatma Gandhi once said “If I have the belief that I can do it, I will surely acquire the capacity to do it, even if I may not have it at the beginning”.
Good leadership starts with a solid and clearly defined leadership philosophy. Why? Because your personal leadership philosophy defines a set of beliefs that determine how you react to people and situations.

Last week I was with two executives from the same company discussing an issue they were having. One (Joe) was feeling overrun and overworked. The other (Mike) agreed and was concerned about it.
The discussion continued and I asked for a specific example of what was happening.
As the example unfolded it became apparent the “Tail was wagging the Dog”!

We’ve all heard the old adage ‘leaders are born not made’, and looking at some examples of great leaders it is understandable why that train of thought is one that is still prevalent today, but how true is it? How many of the qualities that are displayed by great leaders from history are inherent and how many of them are learned through experience and leadership training?
If you examine the lives of the great leaders from history the one thing that links them all and is a key indicator to why they all were such a success is hard work.
